Comiket 85

January 1, 2014

明けましておめでとうございます!

Whew I can’t believe the year is over already. I can’t believe I’ve been living in Japan for 3 months already. I guess working 60 hours a week makes time fly. I really did not do all that much. Even my research is going poorly (which is just par for the course, this is why I will never go back to research after Master’s). But as the year came to a close, there was one final thing to do: Comiket 85.

Notice how you can barely see Tokyo Big Sight from the end of the line.

Notice how you can barely see Tokyo Big Sight from the end of the line.

I could do a full report thing but that involves lines. Lots of lines. Lines of people and lines of text, neither of which I like, so I”ll do a mini-report. I was inexperienced this time so maybe next time I’ll do a little more than wandering around aimlessly. Anyway, on day 1, I was lucky enough to meet up with a guy who was experienced with Comiket through a mutual friend. So we went through the extraordinary long, wide line and marched toward Big Sight around 10am (because I’m an idiot and his group spent like 30 minutes trying to find me). Finally, it came into sight.

Tokyo Big Sight

The weather was pretty much perfect. Not perfect warm but for winter when it sometimes involves standing in the rain for hours, I was pretty lucky. We continued following the endless line toward the corporate booth area (separate lines for separate areas. Japan truly master of lines) and finally got inside! Got inside to find thousands of people packed like sardines and being pushed every which way. It turned into follow the leader but try not to be swallowed by the crowd, hey look I see something I want, oh god no stop the shoving, what where am I, WHY IS THERE A PERSON IN A WHEELCHAIR, what is breathing, hey look I survived and found an exit. Yeaaaah that was not fun. (And I’m serious about the people in wheelchairs in the worst crowd imaginable, that was so dangerous and happened like 3 times) Okay, so we went to check out what Comiket is really known for – the doujin. There are 2 (technically 6, I assume since they can be divided) HUGE halls with lines and lines of tables of all the circles and artists. I purposely planned to go days 1 and 3 since day 2 is BL day so there wasn’t much BL today except for maybe 98%. Oh so they changed it up this year and moved BL day to day 1. Thanks, Japan. Anyway, the crowds weren’t as bad as the corporate area but you weren’t really able to stop walking or you’d mess up everyone so it was near impossible to take pics of the cosplayers I saw. Not like I want pics of the BL anyway…

After that we took a break and I was pretty lost with the area. There are just crowds of people everywhere, and if you don’t know where you want to go, you are kind of screwed. So lucky I had a guide. Also, sitting on the ground, you can literally feel the earth shake from the number of people walking. Some 200,000 people in one building/close surroundings. That’s more than just a fire hazard. After the break, the cosplay area opened up so I took some pictures of them. Here’re a select few.

After that, I basically went to the corporate area (which had died down a lot, so I could finally check out the booths), doujin (where some circles had already sold out and packed and left), and then doubled back to the corporate booths for one final tour. I saw lots of stuff I recognized, lots of stuff I didn’t, and nothing I really wanted except some Shiki goods. Too bad ufotable booth had the longest line there. No surprise but still, really wanted some Shiki. I mean, I have queued 6 hours for Nana goods, but the real deterrent is not being able to do anything else at Comiket other than standing in line. After that, Comiket day 1 was basically over.

So since day 1 was actually BL day, I ended up going to day 2 as well. I went later to avoid the insane crowd. I took a lot of cosplayer pictures this time. Checked the corporate booths again to see ufotable sold out of everything. Picked up Mahoyo OST Repetition (listening to it atm). Don’t think it was worth it but I’ll just tell myself it was if Mahoyo 2/3 production values end up being anywhere near as good as the first. Age booth had something special with a ton of security. I didn’t stick around to see what. Missed out on the Shima reveal at GoodSmile too. Ugh too much going on, none of which I know about until after the fact. Took more cosplayer pics. Checked out some doujin. Wasn’t too interested since it was Touhou day. Lots of KanColle. Saw some NanoFeito which was tempting. Didn’t spend too long there since most of the stuff I’m interested in wouldn’t be until day 3. More pictures, lots of boats. Do not underestimate the popularity of boats.

Day 3 was the real battle. Day 1 was BL, day 2 was Touhou, and day 3 was everything else, so everything I might want. Didn’t do much research but I definitely wanted to visit Diesel’s table first since he’s by far my favorite pixiv artist for obvious reasons. Plum had some nice stuff too so those were the 2 main tables I wanted to visit. I didn’t even have a map so I had to look at someone else’s and memorize where they were. I was in line at 9:30am, doors opened at 10am, and I started moving at 10:45. That’s a long line. Inside was basically the same as day 1 corporate booths, except I knew where I wanted to go. Still, the sheer amount of pushing that had to be done to move even a few inches was insane. Seriously, do not go to Comiket in the morning if you don’t know exactly what you want. I was pretty sad Diesel wasn’t selling any Feito art, but I picked up a pretty nice Signum book and Yagami-ke just because Diesel. Funny how I tend to have pretty good self-control when buying anything for myself but the idea of supporting people I like just makes me drop any amount of money (see: Nana). That said, counting on him to supply me with some Feito at C86 or at least a Winter Fes outfit soon – oh what he already released a Kouhaku one haha. On my way across the giant hall, I stumbled upon 月奏’s table. Excellent, I love his recent Mahoyo stuff. Picked up an Aoko short story since it had some nice art of Mahoyo (Aoko) CGs. It came with character stickers of my choice and he just looks at me and asks “Aoko?” haha this guy already knows me too well. That or his Aoko picture is that popular, which is plausible.

So Diesel was literally on one end while Plum was on the other end of the hall. So much pushing involved to cross that terror sea. Got in line and had to take the “end of the line” sign. It is truly Comiket when you hold the end of the line sign waiting to buy goods. Anyway, I notice everyone is talking about the oh so desirable Feito balnket that Plum was selling. Incidentally, I need a new blanket because it’s getting colder so when I heard Plum was selling that I was like hmmmm but nope, already sold out. Still got to pick up the boat goods I wanted. Anyway, after that, I scouted to see what was where. It was still insanely crowded so I since I didn’t know what I wanted specifically, I figured I’d just do quick window shopping since the tables were organized by topic, for the most part. So I mentally noted stuff like Key and Nanoha and moeboats; I had already noted the aforementioned area I got Aoko. Wait boats over there too. And over here. Holy boats, like 4/6 halls had a huge amount of boat doujin. I don’t know what day was actually boat day. Checked ufotable booth for a miracle, nope. Took a few more cosplayer pics (finally found a Shoukaku) and then went back to find any leftover doujins. Picked up a RW and what was practically the only non hentai moeboat doujin I could find and a Kotorin pin. And then Comiket was over.

So as a whole, pretty decent first Comiket experience. It was way more brutal than AX but once I got the hang of things and knew what I wanted, it became more fun. I definitely need to do a little more research for future ones. Seeing all the cosplay is the most fun for me, although the highlight of this event was probably Plum loot. On one hand, kinda sad it ends at 4pm so there’s not all that much time, especially if you avoid the crowds and go later, but after day 3, I’m like, this is too exhausting to be longer. So while Japan has not been all too kind to me in the last 3 months, I don’t really mind. It’s stuff like this that made me want to come here, and I love it. Also, as I noted multiple times, so many moeboats. Just wow, how in the world did this get so popular in a mere 8 months. I wonder if it’ll be even more popular at C86. Probably.  I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon at least. In other news, I have magic’d up Winter Fes tickets to both days! Thanks to the guys who arranged to trade lottery tickets for tokuten for me. I’m super excited to go and can’t wait to see what kind of songs got voted for. Hoping for a few dark horses to make their way into the setlist. Expect a full report on that for sure. Nana~
